Book Review

N ew York is obviously an intense place of high style and design. It makes sense that when the design afficionados retreat to the beach for the weekends, they bring along their sense of style. They do it in the Hamptons, on Long Island about 100 miles northeast of NYC.

This interesting and beautiful book shows us the modernist architecture we'd so love to tour in person. But we also learn about the evolution of this exclusive community and the people who shaped it into what we know today. Since the 1920's, it's been a breeding ground of American Modernism, with homes designed by a long list of influential architects including Jackson Pollock, Robert Motherwell, and Willem de Kooning, Le Corbusier, Philip Johnson, and Richard Meier.

East Hampton Star columnist and House & Garden contributing editor, Alistair Gordon describes this fashionable utopian beachfront retreat with informative text and 75 color and 100 b&w illustrations and photos. Although it does show us the architecture and interiors of our dreams, it also stimulates the mind, for it really is about so much more than just architecture: it's an informative commentarey on modern American culture.
