Modern Art in Prints

Published by the Museum of Modern Art, New York, 1973, 75 pages, 9" x 9" softbound. Edited by Riva Castelman. 50 b/w photographs, 8 color plates. The prints illustrated in this book were selected for an exhibition that was formed for circulation in Asia, New Zealand, and Australia. The book was published in conjunction with the exhibition which was organized under the auspices of the International Council of the Museum of Modern Art. Fourty-nine artists are included, including: Leonard Baskin, Jim Dine, Sam Francis, David Hockney, Friedensreich Huntertwasser, Ellsworth Kelly, Sol LeWitt, Barnett Newman, Eduardo Paolozzi, Robert Rauschenberg, Edward Ruscha, Jesus Soto, Frank Stella, Andy Warhol, Paul Wunderlich.

Excellent as a reference, this particular copy has the last 65 pages wrinkled from moisture exposure but still in fine readable condition as a reference magazine.

Damaged spine, loose pages and torn area on front cover, but still this is a great issue not to be missed! $30

Feature article: "Trays By Ten Artists: As part of our 'Art for Everyday Living' series, ten artists present their interpretations of what the Random House Dictionary describes as 'a flat, shallow container... used for carrying articles of food, glass, china, etc.' The results, which all conform to this basic description, represent widely different trends in contemporary American art, and prove that the most banal objects can be transformed by a lively imagination." Shows the trays by Tony Martin, Bob Stanley, William Copley, Larry Zox, Gene Davis, Olen Orr, Ray Johnson, Richard Anuskiewicz (cover image), & Stephen Antonakos. "Casual Comparisons", an article in which Jean Lipman compares photographs to paintings and sculpture. San Francisco Houses, After the Fire

San Francisco Houses, After the Fire, Architecture in Context, by Leter Lloyd. This interesting book shows the houses built after the devastating fire of San Francisco's Oakland Hills in October 1991. This book features four of the modern homes built after the fire, built for enlightened design enthusiasts and architects whose works are unashamedly modern. These houses follow the tradition of the Southern California Case Study Houses, the series of experimental designs commissioned in the 1950s by John Entenza, owner and editor of Arts and Architecture magazine. Many of the furnishings shown are classic mid-century modern. Featured homes include: McLane-Looke House, by Stanley Saitowitz; Becker House, by Jim Jennings Arkhitekture; XYZ House, by Philip Banta & Associates Architecture; and House on a Hilltop, by Mark Horton / Architecture. 1997. 79 pages, color photos. $18
